Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem. In fact, about 35% of the U.S. population experiences some degree of tooth sensitivity. Our dentist and team provide treatments to reduce and manage tooth sensitivity so that you can enjoy greater comfort and better oral health. We invite you to call us at 718-747-0020 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tanya Vlacancich and learn more about tooth sensitivity in College Point and Whitestone, New York.

Tooth sensitivity typically results when the dentin begins to transmit sensations to the nerves deep in the core of the tooth. Dentin is a sturdy, calcified tissue and is usually covered by tooth enamel. Dentin is composed of many tiny tubules, and when these tubules become exposed, sensitivity and discomfort are often the result. Dentin may be exposed due to a number of factors, including gum recession, periodontal disease, overaggressive brushing, tooth decay or excessive acid in the diet.

There are several strategies to managing tooth sensitivity. When sensitivity is mild and a relatively minor irritation, our dentist may recommend gently brushing with a soft-bristled brush and using fluoridated toothpaste. You may also try using toothpaste designed specifically for sensitive teeth. If sensitivity persists or if your discomfort becomes more intense, we strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment to diagnose the problem, as it may be an early warning sign of other developing issues. There are a number of treatments which may eliminate sensitivity, including fluoride varnishes, prescription mouthwashes or dental bonding.

What Patients Are Saying

  • I had scheduled an appointment with Dr. Vlacancich while my usual dentist was on vacation, and the office made time to see me very quickly. I was able to fill out my paperwork online, making the process extremely easy when I arrived at the office. Dr. Vlacancich and her staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and talked me through every step, even fitting me in for a cleaning after my issue was resolved. I can't say enough good things. There was not a single bit of pain, and I will definitely be returning for my next cleaning as well as recommending Dr. Vlacancich to my friends and family.

  • Our family (all 5 of us) have been coming here for over 12 years and we have been treated like family. Dr. Tanya always makes time to speak with each and every one of us. She takes in to account our comfort and any concerns we have regarding our care. Her office is clean and modern. She makes coming to the dentist a non-event and we always look forward to having our check up and cleaning every time. Her staff is friendly and always makes us feel welcomed. We would recommend her highly to anyone looking for a dentist in the area.
